Vocal Key Consultation
The right key decides whether a song sounds effortless
Most people sing a song in whatever key they first heard it in. That is rarely the key their own voice carries best. I listen to your recording, work out your range and tell you which key suits you, and why.
This is for you if: You want to sing a song and notice the high parts getting strained or the low ones disappearing. Also worth doing before a recording session, so you do not have to sing it twice.
What you get
- Your vocal range: Your highest and lowest reliable note, plus the register where your voice sounds fullest
- The recommended key: With reasoning: which passages become easier, and what you give up in return
- Your register break: Where it sits, and how the right key works around it instead of landing on it
- In writing: All of it written down, so you still know it four weeks from now
How it works
- You send me a recording of your voice. Phone quality is fine, this is about pitch, not sound quality
- Sing whatever you can: a few lines of the song, plus once as high and once as low as you can go
- You get the assessment within 2 to 4 working days
- On request I deliver your backing track in the new key as well
What this is not
This is not a singing lesson and not vocal training. I tell you which key suits the voice you have, not how to change it. If you do want to work on that, I am happy to tell you what to look for.
What exactly you receive
- A written assessment by email, about one to one and a half pages. Not a form with ticked boxes but written out, so it still makes sense to you four weeks from now
- Your notes by name, so you can check them on a piano or in an app
- The key with reasoning, plus what becomes easier and what you trade off for it
- On request, your backing track in the new key as WAV and MP3
After you order
- You get a confirmation by email straight away. It tells you where to send your recording, in case you did not link it when ordering
- I listen to it, usually the same day or the next
- Within two to four working days the assessment is with you
- Questions afterwards are free. If anything is unclear, write to me
I work on my own, with no team in the background. That means you deal with the same person who listens and writes. It also means places are limited; when it gets busy, it is first come, first served.
Frequently asked questions about the key consultation
I am not a particularly good singer. Is this still worth it?
Especially then. I am not judging how well you sing, I am working out which notes your voice carries reliably. This is a measurement, not an audition. Nobody but me hears the recording, and I will not write a word about your singing.
How do I even record my vocal range?
Phone in hand, hit record, sing. A few lines of the song, then once as high as you can go and once as low as you can go. If you have a piano or an app handy, play the notes along, that helps me further. But it is not required.
And what if I cannot hit the new key?
Then it is the wrong one. That is exactly why I give reasons for the assessment and tell you what you trade off. If you are unsure, take the option with two keys to compare; that gives you a fallback.
Do I get the backing track in the new key as well?
On request, yes, that is the second option at €130 total. You send me the backing track you have, I transpose it properly and send it back. Simply pitching it up on a phone sounds different, and people hear that.
How long does it take?
Two to four working days. With the express option within 48 hours, as long as my calendar allows it.
